Power Broker wins Indiana Derby for Baffert
Power Broker beat Bradester by 1 3/4 lengths in the $500,000 Indiana Derby on Saturday, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record third win in the race.
Ridden by Martin Garcia, Power Broker ran 1 1/16 miles on a sloppy track in 1:41.95 and paid $5.40, $3.80 and $3.20 as the 8-5 favorite in the field of 12 3-year-old colts. Baffert also won the race in 2010 with Lookin At Lucky and in 2009 with Misremembered.
Bradester returned $8.20 and $7, while Holy Lute was another half-length back in third and paid $3.80 to show.
The victory, worth $286,812, increased Power Broker's career earnings to $864,812 with four wins in 10 starts.
In the $200,000 Indiana Oaks, Pure Fun spoiled the bid of prohibitive favorite Fiftyshadesofhay, also trained by Baffert, who sent assistant Jimmy Barnes to saddle his horses.
The two races were held at Indiana Downs for the first time after being run for years at Hoosier Park in Anderson.
In the Oaks, Fiftyshadesofhay finished third as the 2-5 favorite ridden by Garcia.
Pure Fun and jockey Victor Lebron won by 1 3/4 lengths and paid $10.20, $6 and $2.40. She ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.70 for trainer Ken McPeek.
Oscar Party returned $8.80 and $4, while Fiftyshadesofhay was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $2.10.
