Phillips hopes to be back with Reds soon
Could the Reds get a boost this week in the form of a Gold Glove second baseman?
Brandon Phillips told reporters in Dayton on Sunday he hopes to be able to rejoin the Reds on Monday as the team starts a three-game series in St. Louis.
Phillips started at second base and batted second for the Dragons, Cincinnati's low Single-A affiliate, on Sunday afternoon. He reached base his first three times up, including a double in the fifth inning. He also helped turn two double plays in the field as the Dragons lost 10-4 to the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Phillips has been on the disabled list since July 11 following surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb. He began his rehab assignment with a pair of games with Triple-A Louisville, where he went 0-5 with a walk.
The Reds are 12-19 since losing both Phillips and All-Star first baseman Joey Votto in early July, they but went into play Sunday only three games back in the NL wild card race and seven games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.
