Padres option Middlebrooks to Triple-A, recall Almonte

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres optioned infielder Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday and recalled outfielder Abraham Almonte.

Middlebrooks has struggled with consistency this season, hitting .212 in 83 games with 9 home runs and 29 RBI.

Almonte was hitting .275 with 35 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 61 games for El Paso, the Triple-A affiliate for the Padres. He will be hitting in the leadoff spot Wednesday afternoon against the Giants.
