LHP Clayton Richard allowed two runs on three hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings Tuesday night after giving up 16 runs (12 earned) on 16 hits and six walks over 11 1/3 innings in his two previous starts. He had worked to modify his arm angle since his last start. Said Padres manager Bud Black: "His arm slot was a little lower than in his last two starts. His velocity was up, his movement was outstanding."

OF-1B Kyle Blanks had surgery Tuesday afternoon to repair a tear in the posterior of the labrum in his left shoulder.

RHP Tim Stauffer threw a three-inning simulated game Tuesday afternoon. "Tim looked good," said Black. "All signs are pointing in the right direction. He feels like he is throwing the ball the way he should. He feels better than he did all spring." Stauffer is scheduled to throw a side session Thursday. If that goes well, he will make a rehab start with Single-A Lake Elsinore Sunday.

2B Orlando Hudson was 1-for-4 Tuesday and has a seven-game hitting streak (8-for-25) to raise his average from .097 to .196.

LF Carlos Quentin was one of the hitters facing RHP Tim Stauffer Tuesday. But Black said he was "at least a week-to-10 days away from a rehab assignment." He still needs to slide and run the bases and play in the outfield at full speed on his surgically repaired right knee.

OF/1B Jesus Guzman had two teeth extracted from the right side of his face during Monday's day off. Guzman was in pain and is listed as day-to-day. He was unavailable to start Tuesday night.

BY THE NUMBERS: 1-9 Padres' record in games decided by two runs or less this season, including 1-6 at home at Petco Park.

QUOTE TO NOTE:
"It's been talked about so much that I'm numb to it." Padres 3B Chase Headley, on the possibility that the Padres are finally going to alter the dimensions of Petco Park.
