Padres acquire RHP Brandon Maurer from Mariners
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Brandon Maurer from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for outfielder Seth Smith. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
Maurer, 24, (pronounced MAO-er) split the 2014 season between Triple-A Tacoma and the Mariners, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.79 ERA (6 ER, 19.1 IP) and 24 strikeouts against eight walks in 12 games, one start, for the Rainiers, compared to a 1-4 mark with a 4.65 ERA (36 ER, 69.2 IP) and 55 strikeouts against 19 walks in 38 games, seven starts, for the big league club. In his 31 relief appearances for the Mariners, the 6-5, 220 pound right-hander posted a 2.17 ERA (9 ER, 37.1 IP), including a 9.16 strikeouts per nine innings pitched (38 SO, 37.1 IP), compared to a 7.52 ERA (27 ER, 32.1 IP) as a starter. A native of Newport Beach, Calif., Maurer owns a lifetime 6-12 record and a 5.58 ERA (99 ER, 159.2 IP) and 125 strikeouts against 46 walks in 60 games, 21 starts, over parts of two Major League seasons. The 23rd-round selection of the Mariners in the 2008 draft, he owns a 20-21 record with a 3.79 ERA with 365 strikeouts against 135 walks in 89 games, 69 starts, over parts of seven minor league seasons.
Smith, 32, hit .266 with 31 doubles, five triples, 12 home runs and 48 RBI in 136 games for the Padres in 2014. The 6-3, 210 pound outfielder owns a lifetime .265 batting average with 159 doubles, 26 triples, 85 home runs, 321 RBI and 359 runs scored in 2,821 games over parts of eight Major League seasons with the Colorado Rockies (2007-11), Oakland Athletics (2012-13) and Padres (2014).
