GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Packers general manager Ted Thompson now has two more draft picks this year to build the team, as the NFL announced Monday that the Green Bay Packers were awarded a compensatory pick in the third and fifth round.
The Packers were given a third-round pick (No. 98 overall) for losing wide receiver Greg Jennings last offseason and a fifth-round pick (No. 176 overall) for the loss of outside linebacker Erik Walden.
Green Bay's third-round compensatory pick was the second-highest awarded by the NFL, with the Pittsburgh Steelers getting No. 97 overall.
The Packers have done well in recent years with finding good players with their compensatory choices. Left guard Josh Sitton (2008), cornerback Davon House (2011) and defensive lineman Mike Daniels (2012) were all fourth-round compensatory picks. Last year, defensive lineman Josh Boyd was a fifth-round compensatory selection.
Green Bay now has nine total picks in the 2014 draft, including No. 21 overall in the first round. Unlike the Packers' other seven draft picks, the compensatory choices cannot be traded.
According to the NFL, compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.
