Kentucky Derby hopeful Out of Bounds won't make the race because of a leg injury that will require surgery.

Out of Bounds won the Sham Stakes on Jan. 7 at Santa Anita and was scheduled to run in the San Felipe Stakes on Saturday.

Trainer Eoin Harty said Monday that the colt had ''an exceptional workout'' in the morning at Hollywood Park, but about 20 minutes into the colt's cooling out period, he noticed something was wrong.

The trainer said Out of Bounds has a condylar fracture of the left front cannon bone and will have surgery in the next few days. He said the colt's prognosis is excellent.

Harty expects the colt to be out at least 90 days, which would keep him out of the May 5 Kentucky Derby. It also means Out of Bounds wouldn't make the other Triple Crown races, the May 19 Preakness and the June 9 Belmont Stakes.

Harty says everyone associated with the colt is disappointed, including his owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who races as Darley Stable. Out of Bounds is a son of 2001 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Unbridled Elaine and Discreet Cat, the 2006 UAE Derby winner who never raced in the Triple Crown series.

Jockey Garrett Gomez, out nearly two months because of a broken left heel, had planned to return to ride Out of Bounds.

The colt is the second major contender forced out with a leg injury.

Algorithms, who was 3 for 3 lifetime, including a victory in the Holy Bull Stakes, was knocked out last month because of a splint bone injury to his right front leg. Trainer Todd Pletcher said he hopes the colt can return by late summer or early fall.
