CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) A $35,000 crew boat was totaled and nine members of the Oregon State University men's rowing team were rescued when the vessel smashed into a bridge support on the Willamette River.
The accident happened Monday afternoon as several boats were on the river, which was running high and fast because of recent rains. The 30-foot vessel wrapped around a pier at the Harrison Street Bridge.
Three team members started drifting downstream, and the others clung to the wrecked craft. A coach in a powerboat helped rescue the students. No serious injuries were reported.
Crew boats are exempt from requirements that call for life jackets aboard recreational vessels.
