'OK, Zimmermann - You're in already.'
If Jordan Zimmermann had been auditioning Sunday afternoon for a postseason start, probably would have passed.
A no-hitter will usually do that.
But he probably wasn't auditioning. After all, Zimmermann entered his last start with a 2.78 ERA and the highest fWAR among the Nationals' pitchers.
On the other hand, consider his competition!
Stephen Strasburg is Stephen Strasburg.
Tanner Roark's got a 2.85 ERA.
Doug Fister's got a 2.41 ERA.
And let's not forget Gio Gonzalez, who went just 10-10 with a 3.57 ERA this season, but was 21-8 just two years ago and has the third-best fielding-independent pitching stats among the starters ... significantly better than Fister's.
I'll bet we could all agree on Strasburg and Zimmermann, even before Sunday. But who gets left out should generate a healthy debate behind the scenes.
