Former Twins infielder Luke Hughes was claimed off waivers Sunday by the Oakland Athletics. Minnesota designated Hughes for assignment on Wednesday to free up a roster spot for pitcher Jason Marquis.
"I'm very happy to say that I'm off to Oakland," Hughes tweeted Sunday. "Thank you to the Minnesota Twins organization and to the fans. Can't wait for the fresh start."
Hughes, 27, appeared in 96 games last season for the Twins as a utility infielder but played in just four games (10 at-bats) in Minnesota’s first 11 games of the 2012 season before he was placed on waivers. During that time, Hughes played first, second and third base. He collected two RBI on two hits this year. Last season, Hughes batted .223 with 30 RBI and seven home runs in 287 at-bats.
The A’s transferred pitcher Dallas Braden to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Hughes on their 40-man roster.
Oakland visits Target Field for a three-game series at the end of May.
