JUPITER, Fla. -- When Marlins ace Jose Fernandez threw his bullpen before last Friday's Grapefruit League opener against the Cardinals, his fellow pitchers stood along the third-base line to watch.
The same happened on Monday afternoon as right-hander Jacob Turner warmed up with catcher Jeff Mathis.
Righty Tom Koehler, who starts Tuesday, said the club adapted this spring training routine last season from St. Louis.
"No matter who's starting the game, we're going to watch him pitch," Koehler said. "We're trying to create that bond amongst one another."
Since Miami's facilities at Roger Dean Stadium sit behind left field, the players need to walk in that direction to the bullpen benches anyway.
It also serves as a way to get extra eyes on the session. Teammates can let the pitcher know whether anything appears off.
"We all talk to each other and know what we're working on in the spring, so it's a good way to see it put into practice," Koehler said. "That way if I'm warming up I can say, 'Hey, guys. What did you see?' They can give me their feedback. It's like having 15 coaches."
HATCHER OK
Marlins manager Mike Redmond and a trainer visited reliever Chris Hatcher on the mound following a pitch in the fourth inning.
Hatcher appeared out of whack before a 3-2 pitch to Brett Wallace. He would strike Wallace out swinging.
"I thought it was his arm when I first saw him," Redmond said. "When he landed his knee kind of locked on him, but he was fine."
A non-roster invitee who was on the 40-man roster last season, Hatcher pitched two scoreless frames in the third and fourth. He struck out two batters and walked one. Robbie Grossman, the first batter to face Hatcher, got a single as the only hit.
NOTEWORTHY PERFORMANCES
Redmond was impressed with the scoreless outings of left-handed relievers Mike Dunn and Dan Jennings. The pair pitched consecutive shutout innings in the fifth and sixth.

The expanded instant replay system will be tested at five spring training dates: March 13 at Detroit, March 16 at Minnesota, March 20 against the Cardinals, March 23 at Detroit and March 29 at the Yankees.
-- Right-handers Carlos Marmol and non-roster invitee Jesus Sanchez are not in camp due to visa issues.
-- Former Marlins prospect Matt Dominguez went 0 for 3 for the Astros.
-- Pembroke Pines Flanagan High and Nova Southeastern University product J.D. Martinez finished 1 for 3 with an RBI double in the seventh.
