D.J. Russell is a month from attending his first high school class. But he already has made a verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of Miami.
Russell won't arrive in Coral Gables until the summer of 2017 but the Jacksonville Arlington Country Day standout feels his commitment is firm, he told the Florida Times-Union.
“I like Coach (Jim Larranaga) and I like how they run their offense and it fit me real well,” Russell told the Times-Union during a break in his AAU team's schedule. “I can just play my game right now and don’t have to worry about the recruitment.”
The 6-foot-5, 208-pound Russell is just 15 and played mostly on the junior varsity last season. But he was already drawing attention from Division I coaches and projects well at the college level, his coach said.
“He’s got a man’s body right now,” Arlington Country Day coach Red Morgan told the Times-Union. “He’s an ACC player, no question."
