North Jersey casinos may do well, but NYC competition looms
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) If New Jersey follows through on its plans to allow two new casinos in the New York City suburbs, analysts and gambling industry officials agree they could be among the most successful in the country.
But some also caution that these new casinos, intended to recapture gamblers who have been abandoning Atlantic City for casinos in neighboring states, could soon face similar difficulties if New York allows a casino across the Hudson River in Manhattan.
Analysts say the two new casinos should do well, but could be hurt by a Manhattan casino, just as the north Jersey casinos are expected to hurt Atlantic City's remaining eight casinos.
And the new north Jersey casinos are likely to hurt existing casinos in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut.
