No snub for Colquitt this time; named to All-Fundamentals Team
When eight Chiefs were named to the Pro Bowl, at least one deserving player -- punter Dustin Colquitt -- was overlooked. But not today.
When it comes to technique, at least, Colquitt has no peer among punters. So says USA Football, which named Colquitt to its All-Fundamentals Team on Wednesday.
The All-Fundamentals Team "recognizes the NFL players who employ proper techniques," according to the organization's website. USA Football honors 26 players -- 11 offense, 11 defense and four special teams.
For USA Football, the idea is to use NFL players as role models to encourage kids to use proper technique -- blocking, tackling, etc. -- on the field, ultimately enhancing performance and promoting safety.
According to USA Football, with guidance from a five-person selection committee that included former Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson and FOX Sports' Charles Davis, Colquitt employs tremendous technique. And the results are evident; he tied for the league lead with 35 punts inside the 20 and had a return average of 6.5 yards, fourth-best in the NFL.
One other Chief, safety Eric Berry, was named to the All-Fundamentals Team. But unlike Colquitt, Berry is headed to Hawaii.
