The Minnesota Golden Gophers (21-10-2, 12-5) were upset by the Michigan Wolverines (11-17-3, 4-11) on the road, 5-3.
Minnesota's senior forward Taylor Cammarata opened up the game's scoring with his power-play goal in the first period. Leon Bristedt and Brent Gates, Jr. chipped in with the assists.
The Gophers opened up their biggest lead of the night at 2-0 when Rem Pitlick scored his 12th goal of the season with under a minute to play in the first period. Minnesota preserved a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission, thanks to 14 early saves by goaltender Eric Schierhorn.
Michigan struck back, however, scoring two goals to tie it in the third period. Senior Alex Kile opened up the scoring for the Wolverines, and junior forward Tony Calderone evened the scoreboard after deflecting a shot past Schierhorn's outstretched left pad.
Minnesota took back the lead with 6:22 left to play in the game, but Michigan scored three unanswered goals, including an empty-netter by freshman forward Will Lockwood to complete the upset.
Minnesota had won four of its last five games before losing to the Wolverines. The Gophers will have a chance to avenge their loss on Saturday in Ann Arbor, starting at 7:30 p.m.
They will wrap up the regular season with a home series against Michigan State on March 10-11 at Mariucci Arena.
