AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Bryce Dejean-Jones never had a double-double until he joined Iowa State.
The UNLV transfer now has two in just five games under coach Fred Hoiberg.
Dejean-Jones could have added a triple-double to his resume if the Cyclones hadn't taken mercy on overwhelmed Lamar.
Matt Thomas scored 14 points, Georges Niang added 13 and 20th-ranked Iowa State pounded the Cardinals 96-59 on Tuesday.
But Dejean Jones was the star for the Cyclones.
He had 12 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four steals for the Cyclones (4-1), even though he sat the final 10 minutes as Iowa State emptied the bench.
"It's been very exciting," Dejean-Jones said. One of the things (Hoiberg) emphasized with me was rebounding. I told him I'd give it my all with rebounding."
Iowa State shot just 29.7 percent, their second-worst effort in five seasons under Hoiberg, in a 72-63 loss to Maryland last week in Kansas City.
Iowa State then missed 16 of its first 22 shots on Tuesday -- including 11 of its first 13 3-pointers against a team picked to finish 10th in the low-major Southland Conference -- and trailed 20-17 midway through the first half.
But Iowa State finally got enough stops to fuel its transition game. The Cyclones reeled off 16 straight points in just 4 1/2 minutes, a stretch capped by Niang's 3-pointer and a dunk from Morris, to go ahead 33-20.
LeMon Gregory scored 13 points for Lamar (2-5), which outscored 44-6 in points off of turnovers.
"They were really doing a good job of slowing us down and mucking it up, making it an ugly game," Niang said. "When we got out there and Bryce got the rebound and pushed it up the floor and we had good pace, I think that's when we were at our best."
Naz Long had 12 points on four 3s for Iowa State, who had 26 assists on 36 made baskets.
That's an encouraging sign for the Cyclones offense ahead of Thursday's pivotal home game with No. 18 Arkansas.
"We got back to who we are with the 26 assists. That's the thing I'm most excited about with this team. We're moving the ball," Hoiberg said.

Iowa State: The Cyclones surpassed their season high for steals with eight in the first half, including four by Monte Morris. They finished with 16 steals in forcing 27 turnovers. Iowa State freshman Georgios Tsalmpouris, a 7-foot-1 native of Greece who only joined the program in the summer, hit his first career basket, a 3-pointer, midway through the second half. Iowa State's student section was ready, brandishing a Greek flag as soon as it went through.
Lamar: The Cardinals have now lost 17 straight games on T.V. Lamar, which fell at SMU 93-54 last and at Indiana 85-72 in November, last won a televised game during the 2012 Southland tournament.

PIVOTAL MOMENT
Iowa State was up just 21-20 when Morris stole the ball at halfcourt, hit a layup and drew a foul. That woke up a sluggish home crowd -- even though Morris missed the free throw -- and Thomas drilled a 3-pointer that gave the Cyclones breathing room for the first time all night.

Lamar starting guard Preston Mattingly is the son of former New York Yankees star and current Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. Preston was L.A.'s first-round pick in 2006, but he never got out of Class A ball. Preston, 27, joined Lamar last season and was averaging 5.8 points a game entering play. Preston scored just two points against the Cyclones.
