TUCSON, Ariz. -- Katie Hempen and Promise Amukamara each scored a game-high 16 points to lead the No. 18 Arizona State women's basketball team to an 88-41 win over Arizona in the first of consecutive Territorial Cup Series games between the two teams.
Sophie Brunner and Kelsey Moos added 10 points each for the Sun Devils (14-1, 3-0 Pac-12), who matched their best start in school history. The 1982-83 squad also started the season winning 14 of its first 15 games.
ASU shot 59 percent, including 47 percent (7-15) from 3-point range, while holding the Wildcats (7-7, 0-3 Pac-12) to only 27 percent from the floor and a single 3-pointer (1-9).
Elisha Davis nearly became the first Sun Devil since 1992 to post a triple-double as she had eight points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Hempen tied her career high for the second straight game with five assists as the Sun Devils rolled up a season-high 25 assists.
Senior guard Candice Warthen led the Wildcats in scoring for the ninth time this season, while junior guard Keyandra Cannon shot 50 percent from the field. But it wasn't nearly enough.
Warthen scored 13 points and grabbed three rebounds. Cannon notched her third double-digit scoring performance as she recorded 10 points.
All 11 Sun Devils got in the scoring column, including eight who scored six or more points.
ASU scored the game's first seven points and never looked back as it jumped out to a 21-5 lead after a layup by Amukamara with 13:28 remaining.
ASU held the Wildcats to a single-digit point total for almost 15 minutes. A layup by Candice Warthen got Arizona to the 10-point mark with 5:12 remaining.
A 3-pointer by Moos, and a layup and 3-pointer by Hempen were part of an 8-0 run the Sun Devils used to close out the half as they took a 44-14 lead to the locker room.
ASU opened the second half with a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 51-14 with 17:19 remaining.
The outcome was never in doubt over the final 20 minutes as the Sun Devils would lead by as many as 48 after the second of Isidora Purkovic's 3-pointers put ASU up 86-38 with three minutes remaining.
