No. 15 ASU women upset by No. 22 Cal
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Afure Jemerigbe scored a career-high 23 points and Brittany Boyd had 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists on Sunday night to lead No. 22 California past No. 15 Arizona State 74-63.
Boyd made four of her last six free throws as Cal (18-7, 10-4) closed the game on an 11-5 run to take sole possession of second place in the Pac-12.
Gennifer Brandon added 15 points and 14 rebounds while Reshanda Gray had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Bears.
Cal led 32-30 at halftime and opened the second on an 11-0 run. The Bears extended the lead to 15 points three times.
ASU closed the gap to 63-58 with 2:47 to play, but the Sun Devils would get no closer.
Katie Hempen had 12 points, Deja Mann added 11 and Adrianne Thomas scored 10 for Arizona State. Sophie Brunner had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Cal finished with a 49-38 advantage on the boards, and that proved to be a significat factors in the second half, when the Bears scored 11 of their 17 second-chance points.
The Sun Devils, who entered Sunday's game tied for second in the Pac-12 with Cal, have now lost three straight.
