No. 1 Stanford women advance in NCAA water polo

LOS ANGELES (AP) Top-seeded Stanford routed Indiana 18-2 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship, and No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Southern California and No. 4 California also advanced to the semifinals at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

Kiley Neushul had four goals for Stanford (33-1) and Maggie Steffens and Annika Dries each had three. The Cardinal will face California on Saturday. Cal (20-8) held on to beat No. 5 Arizona State 7-4.

UCLA topped UC San Diego 12-8, and host Southern California beat UC Irvine 14-11.

UCLA (26-4) had just a one-goal lead after the first period against UC San Diego (27-11), which got into the tournament by winning a play-in game. The Bruins outscored the Tritons 6-2 in the next two periods to build an 8-3 lead. Rachel Fatal and Alys Williams each scored three goals.

USC (26-3) set up a match with UCLA by downing the Anteaters (24-9). Monica Vavic scored three goals for USC, and Eike Baube and Stephania Haralabidis added two each.

Roser Tarrago had two goals for Cal against Arizona State (17-15).
