ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -- The Detroit Lions selected New Mexico State cornerback Jonte Green in the sixth round of the NFL draft Saturday.

Green was the 196th overall selection and the second NMSU player drafted in as many years under coach DeWayne Walker.

He will get a chance to compete for playing time on a team desperate for help at cornerback. Green was the third corner drafted by the Lions, as they took Louisiana-Lafayette's Dwight "Bill" Bentley in the third round and Albion's Chris Greenwood in the fifth.

"I'm really excited," Green said after the draft. "God is good right now; it is a blessing to keep playing football. I want to thank Coach Walker too. He made me the player I am today."

Green, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., recorded 70 tackles last season and led the team with 14 pass breakups, which ranked second in the WAC. Green also has two interceptions and one forced fumble

Green ended his career at NMSU with 218 tackles, 32 pass breakups and two interceptions.
