LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) The NCAA has ruled that Kansas cornerback Kevin Short is academically ineligible and will have to redshirt this season.

Short, a transfer from Fort Scott Community College, started fall camp late after completing his academic work. He was listed as co-starter but was held out of Kansas' season-opening win against South Dakota.

Kansas coach Charlie Weis said Friday that he was "extremely disappointed" with the NCAA's decision that because Short had a redshirt year available, he should spend it improving his academics.

Weis said Short's junior college transcript gave no indication that Short would not be a successful student, and his grades and transferable hours exceeded entrance requirements.

Short, an NJCAA All-American at Fort Scott, will have two years of eligibility remaining after this season.
