NCAA Regionals: Big West baseball roundup Day 3
Despite a strong Big West showing to open the NCAA regionals, two teams were eliminated on Sunday. Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly were ousted, while UC Irvine lost to Oregon State to set up a deciding game on Monday.
Long Beach Poly will resume play Monday after play was suspended due to inclement weather.
Pepperdine 10, Cal Poly 6
Bryan Langlois hit a go-ahead bases-loaded triple in the ninth inning and Pepperdine advanced to the super regionals with a 10-6 victory over host Cal Poly in the San Luis Obispo regional on Sunday.
The Waves (42-16) got past the regional round for the first time since the winning the College World Series title in 1992.
Oklahoma State 6, Cal State Fullerton 4
Tim Arakawa lined a two-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs as Oklahoma State came from behind to defeat Cal State Fullerton 6-4 on Sunday and win the Stillwater regional.
The top-seeded Cowboys (48-16) beat Cal State Fullerton for the second straight day and advanced to the super regional next weekend to face either Oregon or UC Irvine.
Cal State Fullerton (34-24) threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but Brendan McCurry struck out Taylor Bryant to eliminate the Titans.
Oregon State 4, UC Irvine 0
Scott Schultz threw a two-hit shutout as No. 1 national seed Oregon State defeated UC Irvine 4-0 Sunday night to set up a deciding game at the NCAA Corvallis regional on Monday.
Schultz (7-2) continued a string of dominant pitching for the Beavers' starters, who have surrendered just two runs and 10 hits with 28 strikeouts in their three tournament victories. Schultz finished with four strikeouts.
UC Irvine will meet Oregon State on Monday at 8 p.m. for the regional title.
Long Beach St-North Carolina suspended in 7th inning
The elimination game between Long Beach State and North Carolina at the Gainesville regional has been suspended until Monday due to inclement weather.
The game will resume in the top of the seventh inning with Long Beach State leading 5-4 with runners on first and second base and one out.
