NBA free-agent scraps seek home
With training camp just three weeks away, it's bottom-of-the-barrel time in NBA free agency.
Still, there may be some help out there for some team, somewhere. Especially at this time of year, when the unsigned can expect to receive the bare minimum in cash, no questions asked. That's just the price you pay (or don't get paid) for being at the lower end of your class.
With that in mind, here's the least-worst of who remains (with height, position, age, status and previous team):
Leandro Barbosa, 6-3, G, 29, unrestricted, Pacers
Not a great shooter, but can score via pure creativity. Always plays hard and can back up both guard spots – but not great at either.
Mickael Pietrus, 6-6, F/G, 30, unrestricted, Celtics
Athletic, shoots, defends. Not accomplished in any one area, but solid in all.
Kenyon Martin, 6-9, PF, 34, unrestricted, Clippers
Over-the-hill forward still offers attitude, if not hops. Good tough guy to have on your side.
Matt Barnes, 6-8, SF, 32, unrestricted, Lakers
Plays with confidence and zeal, but does nothing well consistently. Advanced NBA age causing teams to shy away.
Darko Milicic, 7-1, C, 27, unrestricted, Timberwolves
He's no Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh or Dwyane Wade, despite being drafted ahead of all of them. But he is 7-1 with a pulse. Most of the time.
Ivan Johnson, 6-8, PF, 28, unrestricted, Hawks
Big and nasty, and averaged an underrated 6.3 ppg for Hawks last year, playing in all but 10 games. Warrants a look.
Ryan Gomes, 6-7, F, 30, unrestricted, Clippers
Good ball-handler who possesses steady all-around game. Best years clearly behind him, though.
Josh Howard, 6-7, SF, 32, unrestricted, Jazz
Was a borderline All-Star when healthy. But that hasn't been the case since, like, 1912.
Michael Redd, 6-4, SG, 33, unrestricted, Suns
Outstanding leader who can still fill it up when left open via a creative point guard who draws double teams.
Chris Andersen, 6-10, F/C, 34, unrestricted, Nuggets
Great leaper and shot-blocker. But off-court issues can frighten women, children and NBA GMs.
Lester Hudson, 6-3, G, 28, unrestricted, Grizzlies
For 13 games last season with Cavs, was better than Jeremy Lin. Basketball crime he hasn't been signed yet.
Derek Fisher, 6-1, PG, 38, unrestricted, Thunder
Never a great offensive player and not nearly the defender he once was. But no one better when it comes to willingly guiding young point guards.
Louis Amundson, 6-9, PF, 29, unrestricted, Pacers
Poor man's Anderson Varejao. Hustle-player without any ability to put ball on floor.
Tracy McGrady, 6-8, G/F, 33, unrestricted, Hawks
Not long ago, seemed destined for the Hall of Fame. Now, he might be able to give you 10 good minutes.
Anthony Tolliver, 6-8, F, 27, unrestricted, Timberwolves
Pretty good with Warriors in 2009-10 (12.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg), but hasn't done anything worth mentioning since.
Chris Wright, 6-8, F, 23, restricted, Warriors
Not great in any one area, doesn't really have a position. But probably too soon to give up on the guy.
Troy Murphy, 6-10, PF, 32, unrestricted, Lakers
Can still shoot from perimeter. Used to be able to rebound, too.
Mehmet Okur, 6-11, F/C, 33, unrestricted, Trail Blazers
Good size, great range, awful luck staying healthy.
Manny Harris, 6-5, SG, 22, unrestricted, Cavaliers
Weak handle, but had his moments as scorer. Of course, most came in D-League.
Armon Johnson, 6-3, PG, 23, unrestricted, Nets
Can drive past just about anyone. Just don't ask him to make a shot from 10 feet or beyond.
Allen Iverson, 6-0, G, 37, unrestricted, Grizzlies (in '09-10)
Yeah, he still wants to play in the NBA. No longer quick but still wants to shoot a lot. Not exactly selling points.
Gilbert Arenas, 6-4, PG, 30, unrestricted, Grizzlies
Agent Weirdo now has the game of a 50-year old with peanut butter and jelly for knees. Other than that, he's great.
