Coach

Brett Brown can coach. He didn't get to prove it much during his first season, as the 76ers were undertaking some sort of strange plan to lose on purpose. But Brown has the respect of his young team, and if the Sixers ever decide to stop playing the draft lottery, his ability to teach defense and preach ball movement should pay off. Let's just hope the poor guy gets a chance.

Centers

After missing all of last year rehabilitating an injured knee, Nerlens Noel is ready to go. And if summer league is an indication, he has the athleticism and skills to turn into the Sixers' second straight Rookie of the Year. Noel will likely move to power forward once No. 3 overall pick Joel Embiid can play, giving the Sixers a formidable twin towers threat. But that may not be until next season. ... Henry Sims Brandon Davies are vying for backup time in the pivot.

Power forwards

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute is probably the best option for now, even if he really is a small forward by trade. But his defense allows him to play a number of spots. As for consistency on offense, forget it. ... Arnett Moultrie showed some flashes last season and could potentially move into the starting spot. But his work ethic and defense were often ion question. ... Jarvis Varnado is still tyring to prove he belongs.

Small forwards

Last year, the Sixers entered the season with Evan Turner and Thaddeus Young as options. Now? Both of those guys have been traded away. So the door is wide open, and the candidates have much to prove. Start with Hollis Thompson, who had some nice moments and may have a bright future. But right now, he's mostly an inconsistent unknown. ... The only other real possibility is 33-year-old Jason Richardson. He played just 33 games last season.

Shooting guards

Despite the dire situation, Tony Wroten always gave great effort and is the type of well-rounded player who fits into Brown's system. He could be a solid pro for a long time and may have the edge as starter. ... Second-round pick K.J. McDaniels looked very good in summer league, and while he may not start, could potentially be an instant contributor. ... Alexey Shved was obtained in a trade with the Timberwolves and has a strong upside but lacks consistency. ... Ellliott Williams is also in play after a somewhat inspiring year following a major knee injury.

Point guards

Michael Carter-Williams has size, strong ballhandling skills and some serious ability to defend. Those reasons and more are why he's the reigning Rookie of the Year. Combine him with Noel and someday Embiid, and the Sixers may be on to something. ... On the downside, MCW may have to play 45 minutes a night. The only backup in sight: Smallish second-year man Casper Ware.

Projection

Well, it's hard to find a real positive for an organization that seems content to grab a few more top picks before playing to win. Carter-Williams, Noel and Embiid offer a lot of hope for the future, but that's just what it is: the future. Right now, this team is severely lacking at the wing positions and is destined for another miserable season.

Quotable

"I learned a lot from Mike (Carter-Williams) last season. Just about being a rookie, and how he handled himself." -- Nerlens Noel
