NAU women get transfer from New Mexico State
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women’s basketball team announced another addition to its team Friday, as forward Shay Young will be joining the program after playing her freshman year at New Mexico State. Per NCAA transfer rules, Young will have to redshirt during the 2013-14 season.
“Shay is an extremely smart player,” NAU head coach Sue Darling said of Young. “She is an athletically strong 6-foot forward and is a very good rebounder with the ability to get to the basket. She will play an enforcer type role for our team.”
Young saw action in 23 games, including one start, as a freshman last season at New Mexico State, helping the Aggies reach the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament. She totaled 34 points and 28 rebounds in just under six minutes played per game while going 10 for 14 from the free-throw line.
A native of San Diego, Calif., Young starred for Mount Miguel High School and led the Matadors to the CIF Division III finals with a 26-7 record during her senior season. She averaged 22.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game as a senior and earned 2012 All-CIF San Diego Section honors. She was also selected by the San Diego County Basketball Coaches Association to participate in the 2012 Senior All-Star Game.
Young initially chose New Mexico State over Utah State, Santa Clara, and San Francisco.
She becomes the 10th member of NAU’s 2013-14 incoming class along with junior-college transfer Bisera Peshkova and eight freshmen.
