ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Ryan Murphy outkicked a packed field that included gold medalists Michael Phelps and Matt Grevers to win the men's 100-meter backstroke at the Arena Pro Swim Series on Friday.

Murphy ran down the field over the final 50 meters and finished with a time of 53.47. Gri Tarasevich of Russia was second at 53.84 and Grevers, the reigning Olympic champion in the event, was third at 54.20. Phelps never seriously challenged the lead, but took fourth with a time of 54.42.
