FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Arizona women’s soccer team earned its first win of the 2012 season Sunday with a 3-0 shutout of Northern Arizona at Lumberjack Stadium.

The Wildcats (1-2) came out strong, registering their first goal in the eighth minute. Senior Susana Melendez netted her first goal of the season with a header off a throw-in by freshman Sheridan Cohen. The shot appeared to be stopped by Lumberjacks goalkeeper Lauren Weaver, but the goal was counted due to Weaver being behind the goal line when making the stop.

Arizona outshot NAU (0-3) 12-5, with junior Jazmin Ponce leading the way with four shot attempts and senior Susana Melendez tallying three. Fellow teammates Ana-Maria Montoya and Ariel Boulicault both registered two shots on goal.

Montoya, coming off an Olympic appearance, recorded her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage. Six minutes later, she recorded her second goal of the contest on a free kick from near midfield.

In net, UA keeper Gabby Kaufman had five saves to record her first shutout of the season. For NAU, Weaver, making her first start of the season, made three saves and allowed two goals in the first half, while freshman Natalie Gilbertson played the second half and allowed one goal while notching six saves.

Sophomore Savannah Berry led NAU with three shots. Elinor Priest came off the bench and tallied two shots.
