Monte Kiffin celebrates 18th Leap Year birthday
USC’s Monte Kiffin is either among the oldest assistant coaches in college football — or the youngest.
Kiffin, the father of USC Coach Lane Kiffin, was born Feb. 29, 1940, making him a Leap Year baby.
So he is either 72 or 18, depending on the calculation.
“That’s how I stay young,” he said.
As a youngster, Kiffin said his family did not miss his birthday, usually recognizing it on Feb. 28. And he said his wife Robin was born March 1, so they “pick and choose” when to celebrate.
USC coaches and staffers celebrated Monte’s birthday in the office on Wednesday. Coach Lane Kiffin and former Trojans Coach Pete Carroll were among those who also offered birthday congratulations via Twitter.
Monte Kiffin said there would be no time for a celebratory dinner Wednesday night because there was work to do as the Trojans prepare for the start of spring practice on Tuesday.
Asked if he was eager to get back onto the field, he said, “Yes, especially with a birthday this year.”
