Seattle Sounders 2 -- San Jose Earthquakes 3

The 10-man visitors summoned an impressive response to subdue the Sounders at CenturyLink Field. Clint Dempsey headed the opener past David Bingham inside the opening 20 seconds to give the home side the perfect start. Instead of buckling under the pressure, the Earthquakes embraced it. Chris Wondolowski restored parity from a tempting Marvell Wynne cross after 13 minutes. Wondolowski then pounced on a Brad Evans error to send the Earthquakes in front early in the second half. Victor Bernardez reduced the visitors to 10 men after a wild challenge on Micheal Azira drew a straight red card from Baldomero Toledo in the 52nd minute. Innocent Emeghara made all of the resolute defending stand up when he combined with substitute Adam Jahn to score the third after 70 minutes. Obafemi Martins tapped home from close range to halve the deficit in the late stages, but the Earthquakes held out to claim victory.

Columbus Crew SC 2 -- Toronto FC 0

TFC watched its dreams of a result at newly christened MAPFRE Stadium disappear in the wake of a controversial red card to Justin Morrow moments before halftime. Referee David Gantar dismissed Morrow after the recovering left back made an inch-perfect tackle as the last man. Morrow’s exit paved the way for Crew SC to assert control after the interval and secure all three points through goals by Justin Meram and Kei Kamara.

FC Dallas 3 -- Sporting Kansas City 1

Blas Perez scored twice to spark FCD to victory at Toyota Stadium. The Panama forward opened the scoring inside the first half-hour, but Roger Espinoza replied shortly before the break with his effort from the edge of the penalty area. Perez doubled his haul in controversial circumstances as he drifted into an offside position to turn home Michel’s inviting cross. Fabian Castillo sealed the points with FCD’s third inside the final 20 minutes, while Dom Dwyer saw his late penalty saved by Chris Seitz to complete Sporting's miserable trip to Frisco.

Real Salt Lake 3 -- Philadelphia Union 3

Alvaro Saborio converted a disputed penalty four minutes from time to hand RSL a share of the spoils at Rio Tinto Stadium. Javier Morales’ deflected free kick staked the home side to a deserved lead, but Fernando Aristeguieta pounced on a series of peculiarities at the back to score twice and send the Union in front at the interval. Jamison Olave responded with a header 10 minutes into the second half, but he unfortunately poked a Cristian Maidana cross into his own net three minutes later to restore the Union’s advantage. The lead lasted until the waning stages when referee Allen Chapman pointed to the spot after Maurice Edu made scant contact with Luke Mulholland inside the penalty area. Saborio converted to ensure RSL emerged with a share of the spoils.

Chicago Fire 0 -- Vancouver Whitecaps 1

Octavio Rivero settled a dour game with his late winner at Toyota Park. Both teams struggled for long stretches, but the Whitecaps ultimately claimed victory with opportunistic work in the final third. Steven Beitashour collected an errant Lovel Palmer clearance and then picked out Rivero’s clever run toward the penalty spot. Rivero swept home from close range four minutes from the end to snatch the points.
