MLB power rankings: A's keep racking up W's
1. Athletics 28-16 +1
The Athletics have won nine of 10 games entering the week and outscored the Indians 30-6 in a three-game series sweep, continuing their winning formula.
2. Tigers 27-13 +1
Brad Ausmus has proved a very capable replacement for Jim Leyland, and the Tigers are set on returning to the World Series after an exit in last season's ALCS.
3. Giants 28-17 -2
It took seven games, but Matt Cain finally picked up his first win of the season last week against the Marlins. He's had better efforts this season, but the run support hasn't been there. Perhaps things are about to turn in his favor?
4. Brewers 27-18 --
The Brewers started the season hot, and many questioned if they sould sustain the early success. So far, Milwaukee has held on in the NL Central despite Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez missing time.
5. Cardinals 23-21 +5
After a lights-out postseason run in 2013, Trevor Rosenthal was expected to carry the success into the following season; however, the closer has been less than stellar for the Cardinals, posting a 4.98 ERA and paltry 1.93 K/9 ratio.
6. Nationals 23-20 +6
Gio Gonzalez was placed on the DL after allowing 12 earned runs over just 7 1/3 innings in his last two starts, falling to a 3-4 overall after dropping three-straight starts.
7. Angels 24-19 +8
Though he remains maybe the best in the game, Mike Trout has seen some decline at the plate, at least compared to the lofty standards he's held to.
8. Yankees 23-20 +1
The Yankees have a half-game lead in the AL East entering the week in what is shaping up to be the best divisional race in the majors. Can New York stay in front through the end of the season?
9. Rockies 25-20 -4
After hitting a walk-off home run Sunday afternoon, Justin Morneau is proving to be a great offseason acquisition for the Rockies as a replacement to the retired Todd Helton.
10. Orioles 22-20 -4
Matt Wieters could miss significant time due to an elbow injury, which leaves the Orioles without a reliable catcher. Wieters was hitting .308 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 104 at-bats.
11. Dodgers 23-22 -4
Yasiel Puig continues to be the show-stealer in Los Angeles after adding three home runs and 10 RBI to his season totals while raising his batting average to .322 entering the week.
12. Braves 24-19 +2
After starting the season as one of the baseball's best, Atlanta has had a rough May, going 6-10 entering the week. Still, there's plenty of time for the Braves to turn things around.
13. Rangers 21-23 -5
Losing Martin Perez and Matt Harrison for the season is a big blow to the Rangers' pitching rotation. The hitters will need to step up if Texas wants to make it through this season.
14. Reds 19-23 -3
Johnny Cueto threw his third complete game of the season last week, dropping his major-league best ERA to 1.25 in nine starts. Could the Reds' starter be a surprise NL Cy Young winner at season's end?
15. Royals 22-21 +4
Alex Gordon has lacked power in '14, but Sunday's performance against Baltimore going 4 for 4 with a pair of three-run homers and six RBI is certainly a good way to break any sort of slide.
16. Marlins 23-22 +2
The Marlins have performed better than most expected this season, but can Miami continue playing well with young pitching star Jose Fernandez's season lost to Tommy John surgery?
17. Blue Jays 23-22 +4
The Blue Jays are looking to put their disastrous '13 season behind them and be the surprise winners of the AL East. Toronto is sitting just one game behind New York in the standings entering the week.
18. Red Sox 20-23 -5
Just when the Red Sox looked to have something going, they come away with only one win last week in six games against the Twins and Tigers, and are in the middle of a four-game skid.
19. Phillies 19-22 +1
The Phillies' offense has looked flat at times this season, but after scoring 20 runs against Cincinnati over the weekend, Philadelphia could see a turnaround.
20. Mariners 21-22 -4
Since coming off the DL, Hisashi Iwakuma has a 2-0 record with 15 strikeouts and a 1.59 ERA entering the week. Despite a great rotation, Seattle needs more from its lineup.
21. Twins 21-21 +1
Brian Dozier is proving to be a spark for the quietly powerful Twins lineup in his third season in the majors. He leads the team in home runs with 11 and is quickly raising his batting average with his hot bat in the month of May.
22. Mets 20-23 +4
Daniel Murphy enters the week on a 10-game hitting streak and is one of the Mets best players. He leads the team with a .318 batting average along with 28 runs scored.
23. White Sox 21-24 -6
The MLB's home run leader, Jose Abreu, was placed on the 15-day DL with ankle problems; will the rookie pick up where he left off when he returns from injury?
24. Rays 19-26 -1
The Rays need David Price to pitch well with the lack of depth in the rotation due to injury. The team's ace holds a 4-4 record with a 4.28 ERA over 69 1/3 innings.
25. Padres 21-24 +2
Much has been said about the Padres' lack of offense this season. Maybe Carlos Quentin's return from the DL will spark a much-needed increase in run production.
26. Indians 20-25 -2
Nick Swisher and Carlos Santana were expected to be anchors of the Indians lineup this season, however, both are hitting .196 and .152 respectively entering the week.
27. Pirates 18-25 -2
Pittsburgh's bullpen isn't as dominant as it was last season, but it still needs to find a way to hold close leads if the Pirates are going to make up the ground lost this season.
28. Diamondbacks 18-28 --
Will hiring legendary baseball mind Tony LaRussa as chief baseball officer be enough to lift the Diamondbacks out of the hole they've created?
29. Astros 16-28 +1
Back-to-back series wins against the Rangers and White Sox have the Astros feeling good entering the week. George Springer is appearing to find his niche at the big-league level as well.
30. Cubs 15-27 -1
