Missy Franklin wins 200-meter freestyle at L.A. Invitational

Olympian Missy Franklin won the 200-meter freestyle and finished second in the 100 backstroke on the final night of the Los Angeles Invitational on Sunday.

Franklin won in 1 minute, 58.38 seconds, well ahead of Kylie Palmer of Australia, who touched second in 1:58.90.

In the 100 back, Olympian Elizabeth Pelton beat Franklin, winning in 1:00.57. Franklin, a teammate of Pelton at California, finished in 1:00.70. Mikka Sheridan of Australia was third in 1:02.20.

Olympian Matt Grevers won the 100 back in 54.00, lowering his own meet record set in 2011. Ashley Delaney of Australia also went under Grevers' old mark in taking second at 54.03.

The Americans used the meet as final preparations for next month's national championships in Irvine.

Australia sent some of its top swimmers to compete on the Southern California campus in a final tune-up for next month's Pan Pacific Championships on the Gold Coast.

Aussie Jack McLoughlin won the 800 free in 8:04.89, while teammate Justin James won the 200 individual medley in a meet-record time of 2:00.49.

Jessica Hanson of Australia won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.88, beating Olympian Jessica Hardy, who was second in 1:08.03.

Jake Packard won the men's 100 breast in a meet-record 1:00.65. Former Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima of Japan finished eighth and last.

Other winners were: Kendyl Steward in the 100 butterfly; Erin Emery in the 1,500 free; and Giles Smith in the men's 100 fly.
