Michael McDowell Can't Live Down Scary Texas Wreck
FORT WORTH, TX - APRIL 04: The car of Michael McDowell, driver of the No. 00 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota, sits in the garage area after crashing during qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on April 4, 2008 in Fort Worth, Tx.
Michael McDowell, who drives the No. 98 NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford Fusion owned by FOX Sports commentator Phil Parsons, is a legend in Texas, but probably not for the reasons he would like to be. McDowell's infamy is not because of an amazing victory or being part of a thrilling finish, but because of a sick crash he was fortunate to emerge from.
Back when he drove for another FOX Sports on-air personality, Michael Waltrip, McDowell had the most terrifying Sprint Cup crash ever at Texas Motor Speedway.
It was April 2008 during qualifying at TMS, when McDowell did a series of barrel rolls in the No. 00 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota, spewing parts as the car came to a stop.
The best part of the story is that McDowell walked away. In fact, he spent the next few days on a national media tour, reliving and recounting his wild ride.
And every time he comes back to Texas, somebody reminds him of it, as McDowell's tweet on Friday noted:
"Hey ain't you that dude that flipped like fifteen times? Man I thought you were dead." @TXMotorSpeedway Fans. Yes that was me. #thatguy
