Michael Bourn taken out of game due to concerns about his hamstring
MESA, Ariz. - Indians center fielder Michael Bourn was taken out during the second inning of Sunday's split-squad game against the Giants in Scottsdale due to concerns about his left hamstring.
The Indians described the injury as "mild tightness" and he was removed from the game for precautionary reasons. Terry Francona, who was in Mesa for the game against the Cubs, offered the same assessment and that there will be an update on Bournâs condition on Monday.
It is the same hamstring that Bourn had offseason surgery. Bourn originally injured it during the Tribe's regular-season finale in Minnesota on Sept. 29 as he was attempting to steal second base during the ninth inning. He played in the AL Wild Card game three days later, but went 0 for 4.
Bourn, who has been on the disabled list only twice since 2007, is hoping to bounce back this season after playing only 130 games last season. He has the most steals in baseball over the past six seasons but had only 23 last season after five years of 40-plus. He batted .263 from the leadoff spot and saw his on-base percentage dip to .360.
The Tribe completed a split-squad sweep with a 5-1 victory. Aaron Harang, who is making a bid for the final starting spot, worked four innings and gave up the lone run while allowing four hits and striking out three.
Lonnie Chisenhall drove in a pair of runs and Nick Swisher had two hits, including his first home run of the spring.
