FOXSportsSouth.com invites you to meet the Braves as we begin a month-long look at our team, player-by-player. We'll revisit 2011 and project what 2012 might look like.

Cristhian Martinez

Position: P
Height: 6-1; Weight: 185
Bat/Throw: R/R
Hometown: Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Experience: Third season

2011 in review: Martinez provided depth and versatility to the Braves’ bullpen, going 1-3 with a 3.36 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 77 2/3 innings. He allowed only two hits in six innings in the Braves’ 4-3, 19-inning victory over the Pirates on July 26. He also singled and had two sac bunts in the game.

Career highlight: Martinez, pitching for the Marlins, picked up his first major-league victory by shutting down the Brewers for 1 2/3 innings on June 1, 2009.

Outlook: Martinez is a valuable member of the bullpen because of his ability to pitch in long relief. He’s started 106 games in the minors, including four at Triple-A Gwinnett in 2011.

You should know: In the 19-inning game, Martinez became the first Braves pitcher to go that long in relief since Rick Mahler threw eight shutout innings on May 14, 1988.

Sunday: Jose Constanza
