McCoy, Longhorns moving past Oklahoma win
Texas had coach Mack Brown said senior quarterback Casey McCoy has cemented his own legacy at Texas now with wins over both Texas A&M and Oklahoma.
It looks like McCoy will have a chance to add to that legacy as he remains the starting quarterback while David Ash remains out with a head injury.
Brown made it sound like Monday that when and if Ash returns, a decision will have to be made as to who the starter is. But that's not an issue now.
"It is Case's team because until David returns then we would have to consider David and Case and then try and figure it out," Brown said. "Until we're told that David is returning to practice, Case is the only one on this team that's taken a snap at quarterback. He did a great job on Saturday. He did an outstanding job up at Iowa State. At this point it is Case's team. When David returns, then we'll have to look at it."
McCoy threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns in the 36-20 win Saturday or then No. 12-ranked Oklahoma. He limited his mistakes too, which Brown thought was key.
Texas (4-2, 3-0 in Big 12) has won consecutive games with McCoy as the starter. While his play Saturday against Oklahoma may have come as a surprise to some, Brown wasn't one of them.
"He's been to this game as a whole lot," Brown said. "He's been there as a little brother (to Colt). He's played in the game. He's played well in the game as a cleanup. He had some tough moments in the game, early in the game. He's been all over the map in this game and we thought he would handle it well. He did a great job of hitting throw throws when he needed to."
While McCoy may have cemented his UT legacy, a Big 12 title would add to that. Texas must now move past the OU win and focus on its game in two weeks against TCU. The Frogs beat Texas last year in Austin.
"Our guys will enjoy the win over Oklahoma today," Brown said. "We gave them off yesterday because we had the week off. We'll meet this afternoon and we will put the Oklahoma game to bed and then we've got to start our focus on TCU and try to win No. 4 in the league. Our guys are excited about that. You don't forget the speed bumps you've had out of conference. They've taken the adversity and gotten stronger and they're moving forward from it and that's what you have to do to be strong."
The non-conference adversity included losses to BYU and Mississippi and the firing of defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. Despite that, Texas still controls its own destiny as it's one of just three unbeaten teams in Big 12 play (Baylor, Texas Tech).
It's too early to pick a true favorite, but the Longhorns are just happy to be in the mix.
"Our league is exciting this year because there's not a team everybody can pick," Brown said. "It's already changed two or three times. That's in our favor because we didn't start well but we still have a chance to win our conference championship."
