COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) Angelo Mathews has resigned as Sri Lanka's cricket captain in all three formats of the game in the wake of the country's first-ever one-day international series loss against low-ranked Zimbabwe.

Sri Lanka Cricket named Dinesh Chandimal as the new test captain while Upul Tharanga will be in charge of the team in the shorter formats.

The 30-year-old Mathews stepped down two days after a 2-3 loss to Zimbabwe in the one-day series, Sri Lanka's first ever in six series.

He led the team during a tumultuous period for Sri Lanka's cricket with the retirement of several star players.
