MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins recalled outfielder Jake Marisnick from Triple-A New Orleans and optioned catcher J.T. Realmuto to Double-A Jacksonville prior to Monday's game against the Washington Nationals.
Marisnick will be making his third stint with the club this season. He has hit .170 with three runs and five stolen bases over 13 games, the last of which came June 28 against the Oakland Athletics.
"Any chance you get to come up here and get the experience is awesome to be able help the team win any way I can," Marisnick said. "It was a little tricky this time because we were coming out of our apartment (in New Orleans) and I had the call late last night and pack the whole apartment. That was tricky, but a good problem to have."
With New Orleans, he batted .278 with 16 doubles, four triples, 10 homers and 40 RBI in 88 games. Marisnick rebounded from a rough April when he hit just .182. During his most recent stretch with the Marlins in early July, he did not record a plate appearance.
"I went down and made some adjustments and just feeling real good at the plate putting good at-bats together that has been going on for awhile, a few weeks," Marisnick said. "It's been a good process since the first month struggling working up to how I've been swinging the bat lately."
Realmuto was brought up from the Suns on Friday for the interleague series in Houston but did not see action in a game. He was hitting .301 with 21 doubles, four triples, six homers and 46 RBI in 71 games with Double-A Jacksonville.
Miami had been playing all week a bench player short with a taxed bullpen in need of an extra arm -- right-hander Anthony DeSclafani. However, he was not needed as the rotation settled down.
"We really brought J.T. up to have a little more flexibility, 'cause I was planning on using (Jarrod Saltalamacchia) as a DH just to give us a bat," manager Mike Redmond said. "You don't need a lot of position players in the American League because you typically don't do a lot of pinch-hitting, so I wanted Salty to DH and so we brought up J.T. to give us some backup knowing (Jeff) Mathis was going to catch a few of those games. We just don't need that now.
"Jake brings another option if we need a pinch-runner or a guy defensively. We have that with him. He can steal a base."
