MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins and right-hander Kevin Gregg are close to reaching a minor-league deal that will bring the reliever back to the organization.
Gregg, who must pass a physical, spent two seasons with the Marlins from 2007-08, tallying 61 saves in 74 opportunities. He is 30-44 with a 4.07 ERA and 177 career saves in 11 seasons.
The 35-year-old has not pitched in 2014, but he went 2-6 with a 3.48 ERA and 33 saves in 2013 with the Chicago Cubs.
Miami continues to seek upgrades to its bullpen, which ranks 23rd in the majors with a 4.04 ERA. The Marlins sit three games out of first in the National League East.
Right-hander Carter Capps will receive a second opinion on his right elbow sprain Wednesday. The Carlos Marmol experiment failed when the club released him last month after he posted an 8.10 ERA.
