A man was killed Sunday during a race at the Australian jet ski championships, prompting the cancellation of the event.

Police and ambulance officers were called to the event, being held on the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane, just after 2:00pm local time after the man was involved in a crash with another craft.

It is understood the 22-year-old was competing in the final round of one of the lower divisions of the championships.

It was the first time in five years that the championships had been held on the Gold Coast, and the event drew big crowds throughout the weekend.
