After experiencing elbow soreness for much of spring training, Ryan Madson and the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday received the news they dreaded most: The closer will miss the entire 2012 season after he undergoes Tommy John surgery. That's $8.5 million down the drain for the Reds, but it presents an opportunity for fantasy owners.
Sean Marshall is the top candidate to replace Madson. The Chicago Cubs traded Marshall to the Reds in the winter. He saved five games with 34 holds and a 2.26 ERA / 1.10 WHIP last season with Chicago.
Marshall might be the plan for now, but this also opens the door for Aroldis Chapman and possibly Nick Masset to vulture some saves throughout the season if the 6-foot-7 Marshall were to struggle.
