Pearson leads Toledo over Ohio 82-76
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Rian Pearson scored 29 points and Toledo defeated Ohio 82-76 Wednesday night.
The victory kept the Rockets (21-3, 9-2) atop the Mid-American Conference's West Division while Ohio (17-7, 7-4) dropped into second place in the East behind co-leaders Akron and Buffalo.
The Rockets had lost at Ohio 95-90 in overtime on Feb. 1.
Pearson hit 12 of 18 shots for his 29 points, one short of his career high. Julius Brown added 17 points.
Nick Kellogg led Ohio with 21 points, making 4 of 11 3-point attempts to move into second place all-time at Ohio with 260. Travis Wilkins added 17 points, making 5 of 7 3-pointers. Jon Smith grabbed 11 rebounds to go with 10 points.
Kellogg made two free throws to get Ohio within four with 37 seconds left but then missed a 3-pointer. Julius Brown, fouled on the rebound, made two free throws to ensure Toledo's win.
Western Michigan pulls ahead of Akron 57-54
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- David Brown scored 17 points and Western Michigan pulled ahead in the final 2 minutes to beat Akron 57-54 on Wednesday night.
Akron (16-8, 8-3 Mid-American) led by eight at halftime. The Broncos tied the score midway through the second half after Shane Whittington scored five-straight points. Western Michigan (15-8, 8-3) did not take back the lead for the first time since a 4-2 advantage, however, until Brown hit a layup with 1:16 to play.
Akron's Quincy Diggs made two free throws to tie the score again, but the Zips missed their last two shots and Eastern Michigan closed out the game with three free throws.
Whittington scored 15 for the Broncos while Connar Tava and Tucker Haymond added 12 apiece. The Broncos got all their points from their starters.
Demetrius Treadwell scored 16 points and pulled in 12 rebounds to lead Akron.
McCrea, Buffalo roll past Miami (Ohio) 75-62
OXFORD, Ohio (AP) -- Javon McCrea scored 25 points -- moving into second place on Buffalo's all-time scoring list -- and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Bulls beat Miami (Ohio) 75-62 Wednesday night.
McCrea made 12 of 14 field goals, including a layup with 12:41 left in the first half which moved him past Jim Horne -- who scored 1,833 points from 1951-55 -- and gave Buffalo 17-8 lead. McCrea now sits 51 points behind Rasaun Young, who scored 1,908 career points.
The Bulls (14-7, 8-3 Mid-American) never trailed and out-rebounded the RedHawks 40-25.
Will Felder's jumper with 7:25 to play pulled Miami (9-13, 5-6) within three, but McCrea scored nine points during an 11-4 spurt that gave Buffalo a 70-60 lead with 1:19 left.
Jaryd Eustace paced the RedHawks with 17 points. Felder added 13 and eight boards.
Joshua Freelove scored 16 in the win.
Kent State rallies for 62-61 win vs. Bowling Green
KENT, Ohio (AP) -- Devareaux Manley made a game-winning 3-pointer with less than a second remaining as Kent State rallied to beat Bowling Green 62-61 on Wednesday.
Bowling Green's Spencer Parker made two free throws with 8 seconds left, setting up Manley's heroics.
Kent State trailed 40-27 early in the second half but used a 12-0 run, with two Derek Jackson 3-pointers, to spark its offence and pull within 40-39.
Mark Henniger's dunk gave Kent State its first lead of the second half at 59-58 with 2:29 left. The Golden Flashes would not score again until the game's final shot.
Derek Jackson made five 3-pointers en route to a career-high 25 points, on 8-of-11 shooting, for Kent State (13-11, 4-7 Mid-American Conference).
Cameron Black and Jehvon Clarke scored 18 apiece for Bowling Green (10-14, 4-7). The Falcons opened the game on a 13-0 run and closed the first half outscoring Kent State 13-4.
