The goal that coach Jim Schwarz set for the Lions, to learn to win games by finishing strong and making plays in the clutch, has narrowed the focus to one final target.
Finish a game -- just what the Lions have done in a three-game winning streak -- has turned into finish the season.
Put the hammer down. Walk away from the 2010-11 season (I've been waiting all year to write that) with a swagger instead of a limp.
Win -- whatever it takes.
The last goal of this season is for the Lions to beat the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field on Sunday and stretch their winning streak to four games.
They have been resourceful at times and dominant at others, but always unyielding to adversity in victories over the Packers, Bucs and Dolphins.
There is a sense of purpose among the Lions that has been missing late in the season for a decade. As difficult and tiring as the pro football grind can be, there is a feeling among the Lions that they wish they could flip the season over and keep playing.
They can't do that, of course. They've been out of realistic playoff contention for two months.
They can still make a positive statement, but the only way to do that is by winning.
"I think the important part here is to put ourselves in the frame of mind that this isn't the end of our season," Schwartz said. "There are a lot of teams right now that are getting ready to go possibly play four more games or three more games (in the playoffs).
