Lions sign DT Tyrunn Walker
The Detroit Lions made another move Thursday night to revamp their defensive-tackle rotation.
The Lions signed free agent Tyrunn Walker, an improving part-time player last season with the New Orleans Saints, to a one-year contract worth a reported $1.75 million.
Detroit entered the offseason with four defensive tackles eligible to become free agents. The team lost Ndamukong Suh to the Miami Dolphins and hasn't re-signed Nick Fairley, C.J. Mosley or Andre Fluellen at this point.
The new-look defensive front will feature 6-foot-4, 340-pound Haloti Ngata, who was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens in a trade, and the 6-3, 294-pound Walker, who had 2 1/2 sacks and one forced fumble in 306 snaps last season.
The Saints have major salary-cap problems and chose not to tender a restricted free-agent offer to Walker, 24, making him eligible to sign with any team as an unrestricted free agent.
The Lions now have three defensive tackles on their roster, including Caraun Reid, plus another versatile lineman, Jason Jones, who started at end but can also move inside if needed.
Justin Blalock, an offensive guard who was released by the Atlanta Falcons, made a visit to the Lions' headquarters Thursday but apparently left without having signed a contract.
