The Detroit Lions have locked up their franchise quarterback through the 2017 season.

Matthew Stafford, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft, wasn't going anywhere. He had two years remaining on his original contact. The Lions aren't about to let him get away, and Stafford seems intent on trying to win in Detroit.

Stafford has signed a $53 million, three-year
extension to stay under contract with the Lions for at least the
next five seasons.

Stafford and the Lions agreed to terms
Tuesday on the deal that will pay him another $41.5 million in
guarantees, and he signed the contract Wednesday morning.
