Gary Kubiak is the latest former NFL head coach who has experience working with quarterbacks to be considered for the Detroit Lions' coaching job.
Kubiak, 52, interviewed Tuesday at the Lions' headquarters in Allen Park, Mich., according to the team.
Kubiak was part of three Super Bowl teams as a player and three Super Bowl champions as an assistant coach.
More recently, he was the Houston Texans' head coach and recorded a 61-64 record in eight seasons. He led the Texans to the playoffs the last two years but was fired after an 11-game losing streak this season.
Kubiak fits the mold that has developed during this search by the Lions, who appear to be looking for someone who can help quarterback Matthew Stafford get back on track.
Kubiak spent nine years as a backup quarterback for the Denver Broncos behind John Elway. He also was a quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers and an offensive coordinator for the Broncos.
He is believed to be the second coach to interview in Detroit. Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell, a former head coach for the Indianapolis Colts, spent time going over tape with Stafford during his visit last Friday.
San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, a former Arizona Cardinals head coach, is expected to interview with the Lions sometime this week in San Diego.
Whisenhunt, who also has generated interest from Tennessee, Minnesota and Washington, is allowed to interview this week, but he can't be officially named as a head coach until the Chargers' season ends. San Diego will play Sunday at Denver in the AFC playoffs.
Former Tennessee head coach Mike Munchak, a Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive lineman, is scheduled to interview Friday with Detroit. He was fired last weekend by the Titans.
The Lions also reportedly have requested an interview with Jay Gruden, an offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.
