Leyland: Martinez might catch in Game 6
Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is considering using designated hitter Victor Martinez as the starting catcher in Game 6 of the ALCS in Boston on Saturday.
Leyland's usual starting catcher, Alex Avila, is day-to-day with a strained left knee suffered in a home-plate collision during Thursday's Game 5 loss to the Red Sox.
"That's been thought about, yes," Leyland said of using Martinez as catcher.
Martinez, who sat out all last year with a knee injury, played catcher just three games this season.
Leyland said he would then make hobbled third baseman Miguel Cabrera the DH and start either Don Kelly or Ramon Santiago at third.
"I don't know what's going to happen," Leyland said. "I'm hoping Alex Avila can catch."
Leyland added that Jose Iglesias will start at shortstop and Austin Jackson will continue to bat eighth.
