Late homers help Arizona State beat Clemson in regional opener

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Joey Bielek and Brian Serven hit consecutive home runs for Arizona State in the sevneth inning, and Ryan Kellogg limited Clemson to two runs and six hits in seven innings to help the Sun Devils beat the Tigers 7-4 on Friday in their NCAA regional opener.

Kellogg (9-2) struck out six. Clemson rallied for two runs in the ninth, but Ryan Burr came on in relief and struck out Tyler Krieger with two on to end the game and earn his 14th save.

With Arizona State (35-21) down 2-1 in the seventh, Bielek hit a two-run homer. Serven followed with his shot to make it 4-2, and the Sun Devils added three runs in the eighth, including two in a triple by Trever Allen.

The Tigers (32-28) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on Andrew Cox's two-out, two-run single.

Allen homered for the Sun Devils in the fifth to cut it to 2-1.

Matthew Crownover (10-3) took the loss for the Tigers. He did not allow a runner until Jake Peevyhouse's one-out single in the bottom of the fourth.

On Saturday, Arizona State will play the Cal State Fullerton-Pepperdine winner and Clemson will face the loser in an elimination game.
