Jason Kidd has said several times the past six months that he would be open to returning to the Dallas Mavericks even if the team signs another point guard.
Kidd, 39, has appeared in 1,315 regular-season games and started 1,302 of them. But if the right point guard is already on a team's roster, Kidd said again last week, he wouldn't mind being a reserve.
"If I am backing up Deron [Williams] or Jeremy Lin or Steve Nash somewhere, that fits me perfectly," Kidd said Thursday on 98.7's "The Michael Kay Show" in New York.
Kidd didn't specifically mention the Mavericks during the interview but did add that he wouldn't rule out joining the Knicks or Nets.
When asked about playing with Nash, Kidd responded: "He can start 41 games, and I'll start the other 41."
"I just want to help a team win," Kidd added. "I have been very fortunate. The game has been great to me, so wherever I can help a team get to the next level, that's what I want to do."
Although the chances might be slim, there's a possibility that any of the point guards mentioned by Kidd could wind up with the Mavericks next season. Lin is the least likely of the group because the Knicks can match any offer he receives after he becomes a restricted free agent on July 1.
Nash, who played in Dallas from 1998-2004, can become a free agent next month, and the Mavericks could make him an offer. However, that's unlikely if the Mavs get Williams, who is the team's top priority.
