A northeast Kansas high school football player has died of complications from a stroke he suffered during a game Thursday night.

The Shawnee Mission school district said 17-year-old Shawnee Mission West wide receiver Andre Maloney died Friday afternoon at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/GDs6Ml ) doctors found a blood clot in his brain but were unable to remove during three hours of surgery.

Coaches and teammates said Maloney became dizzy and collapsed on the sideline night after scoring a touchdown on a 63-yard pass against Leavenworth. They reported he barely touched on the play but complained that he couldn't feel the side of his body.

Maloney started at wide receiver and cornerback and had verbally committed to play football at Kansas.

"It's not so much as a coach, (but) as a dad and loving parent, that is a nightmare," Kansas football coach Charlie Weis told FOX Sports Kansas City, his voice slow and weary. "A true tragedy."
