Jones, Knight lead Middle Tennessee past UAB 55-53

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Shawn Jones scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, and Tweety Knight hit the game-winning layup with 4 seconds left, as Middle Tennessee beat UAB 55-53 Thursday night to remain tied atop the Conference USA standings.



Chad Frazier hit 1 of 2 free throws with 1:58 remaining to give UAB a 53-47 lead. Seven seconds later, Knight for Kerry Hammonds II for a 3-pointer and, following a Frazier turnover, Neiko Hunter tied the game at 53 by hitting a 3 with 1:01 to play.



After Frazier missed a jumper on the other end, Knight made the game-winning layup.



Hammonds scored 11 points and Knight finished with eight and four assists for Middle Tennessee (23-8, 13-3), which shot 50 percent from the field and from 3-point range in the second half.



Frazier paced UAB (18-12, 7-9) with 16 points while Rod Rucker added 15 and eight rebounds.
